These photomontages from the series, Pages from a Working History of Art,
were produced at the Kodak Center for Digital Imaging in Camden, Maine. The
allegorical portraits honor some of my favorite artists, writers and filmmakers
including writer Franz Kafka, the Czech animator Jan Svankmajer, the American
photographer Frederick Sommer, British First World War poet Wilfred Owen and the
great early Renaissance wood carver from Nuremberg, Veit Stoss. Other artists
appearing in the series include filmmakers Billy Wilder, Andrei Tarkovsky, and
the Brothers Quay, writer Witold Gombrowicz, German collagist Hannah Höch, and
photographer Emmet Gowin. |
* The face of Frederick Sommer is from a photograph by Lauren Shaw, used with permission.
